So, let’s start. Over the past five decades, we found that there have been significant improvements in the fields of translation and interpretation, resulting in better services for clients and better conditions for interpreters and translators.
In fact, interpretation has played a critical role in cross-cultural communication and diplomacy for thousands of years. One of the earliest recorded instances of interpretation was during the reign of the ancient Egyptian pharaohs, where interpreters were used to communicate with foreign diplomats and traders. Similarly, ancient Rome had a class of interpreters known as “interpretes“, who were responsible for translating speeches and diplomatic messages.
Also, in ancient China during the Tang Dynasty, the royal court relied on highly skilled interpreters who were proficient in multiple languages, and they played a crucial role in diplomatic missions to other countries. Similarly, during the Renaissance in Europe, interpreters started to get requested as trade and cultural exchange between nations intensified.
Over time, the art of interpretation has developed, and the growing use of technology and the expansion of globalization have resulted in a greater need for language services in a range of areas including healthcare, international relations, and business.
Some of the most recognized interpreters in time have been:
- Juana Inés de la Cruz: a Mexican nun, poet, and intellectual who was known for her ability to interpret Nahuatl and other indigenous languages into Spanish during the 17th century.
- Sacagawea: a Shoshone woman who served as an interpreter and guide for the Lewis and Clark expedition in the early 19th century, helping them navigate and communicate with various Native American tribes.
- Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama: a spiritual leader and interpreter who has traveled extensively throughout the world, promoting peace and understanding between cultures and religions.
